Seen here are the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Olivia Grange (l), and Rector, St. Andrew Parish Church, Reverend Major Sirrano Kitson . The house, named Sunshine Chalet , will accommodate an entire squad and their managers and is also suited for events of the Jamaica Netball Association. The official handing over took place yesterday (Jan 15). Prime Minister Bruce Golding told members of the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) and the netball fraternity, that the greater cause for celebration is not receiving their new home, the Sunshine Chalet, but the success that the Sunshine Girls have brought to Jamaica .

“It is the efforts that you have made, the courage that you have shown, and the joy that you have filled the hearts of so many Jamaicans with. You have challenged the best and demonstrated to them that you are among the greatest in the world.”

Speaking at the handing over of the new house leased by the government to the JNA yesterday (Jan 15), Mr. Golding said the girls have demonstrated that they are among the best, despite challenging circumstances and limited resources.

“This reflects in my view, something that we must never underestimate; something about us in my view that has a value that we can never fully measure. It is that thing we call the Jamaican spirit.” the PM told the netballers. Mr. Golding said he is convinced that the private sector will respond and give support to the JNA so that the house will become a home and facilitate the kind of bonding that is critical to their success.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Olivia Grange said that the gesture is proof that the government is standing beside the netballers for them to be the best and she pledged continued support .

MINISTER of Sports Olivia Grange has promised further support for the development of netball in the island.

Grange was speaking at Friday's official handing over of the netball team house at Barbican, in the presence of Prime Minister Bruce Golding, Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) president Marva Bernard, International Federation of Netball Associations president Molly Rhone and chairman of the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), David Mais.

Said Grange: "This gesture by the government of Jamaica and by the Prime Minister is further proof that the government is standing behind and beside our netballers in their quest to be the number one team in the world at all levels."

The minister also responded to Bernard's long-time request for a team bus for the players.

"... You can rest assured that there is more to come. I did promise that I would walk hand in hand with the JNA. Well, I promise you... that I'll help you catch the bus," Grange quipped.

As minister with responsibility for land, Golding approved a 49-year lease of the government property to the JNA as a residence for training squads and coaches.

Bernard was recently quoted in this newspaper as saying that accommodation alone has cost the JNA approximately $6 million over the last five years.

A place to call HOME...Sunshine Chalet

The Sunshine Chalet will be the new home for national netball teams being prepared by the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) for various competitions.

The Prime Minister, the Hon. O. Bruce Golding will at 2:00pm on Friday, January 15, 2010, hand over the keys to the JNA. The house is located at 17 Widcombe Road, Kingston 6 and will be leased to the association for 49 years.

All expense to repair the house will be borne by the JNA. President Bernard when asked how that would be accomplished, quickly pointed out that plans are already on the way to have a "Refurbishing Fair", where potential sponsors will be courted to assist in whatever way they can with the refurbishing efforts. She further added that already persons have volunteered household articles. There are also plans to have various fund raising activities first of which is a BBQ to be held shortly. The JNA has identified a project manager; a steering committee will be formed to oversee the project

An ecstatic President Bernard thanked the Prime Minister and the Minister of Sports, the Hon. Babsy Grange for coming to the JNA's rescue. She noted that over the last five years the JNA spent close to six million dollars ($6M) to house various national teams that were being prepared for competitions.
