Netball – not a regular game |
Netball is a game that is supposed to be played primarily by women in Jamaica. It can double as a fierce competitive game, while providing classic entertainment. The entertainment comes from the spectators in the stands who have ball by ball commentary for all to hear.
The teams wear their uniforms, some way below the international requirement, but that is accepted. The officials in full white, branded with the Sponsors’ logos are always there. More men than women umpires, which has become a phenomena in recent years. More men have become national and international umpires in the last five years.
The table officials are all set up, with scorers, electronic time keepers, there are electronic scoreboards too. Then there is the announcers’ table with the league coordinator and her crew. That is a complete outfit which is always ready for a full day’s work, even when it rains.
The fans come out in their most creative outfits…which range from the latest hairstyles, wigs, dresses, shoes of different shapes, sizes and colours. It is a truly a sight to see. This environment is not for the faint-hearted, but if you are a true sport, then it is worth the experience of a lifetime.
The venue is the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston, a part of the Independence Park Complex, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from November to June (Jamaica Netball Association leagues); June to October (Business House leagues). If you happen to be around the city of Kingston any of these days, please stop by the courts… 5:30 on weekdays and 2:00 on Saturdays. There is sometimes a fee to enter, but it is always affordable

"officially" one of the biggest fan of the sport of netball |
|
OK I am "officially" one of the biggest fan of the sport of netball. I worry though about the direction the coaching & officiating is going... too much male gender ! Its time for our young, motivated & talented females to get involved in this side of the sport; ex-players is a great place to start then maybe move to do some scouting in the high schools... oh but the high school coaches are males too (sigh).
Cheers ... Lady Antoinette |
